Aros Park: The Victorian Legacy of Tobermory

Just a mile south of the brightly colored harbor of Tobermory lies Aros Park, one of the most diverse and historically rich woodland parks in the Inner Hebrides. Once the private playground of the wealthy Allan family—owners of the Allan Shipping Line—the estate was transformed into a public park in the 1960s. Today, it serves as a stunning blend of wild Highland nature and carefully curated Victorian landscaping.

Aros Park is more than just a place for a stroll; it is a layered landscape where you can find industrial ruins, towering exotic trees, hidden waterfalls, and one of the UK’s most scenic disc golf courses. Whether you arrive by foot along the coastal path from Tobermory or by car, the park offers a sanctuary of peace overlooking the Sound of Mull.

The Ghost of Aros House

The open grassy spaces and the massive stone foundations near the car park are all that remain of Aros House, a grand Victorian mansion that once dominated this hillside. Built in the late 19th century, the house was a masterpiece of Scottish baronial architecture, featuring oak paneling and lead roofs.

Sadly, after the Allan family departed in 1959, the house fell into rapid disrepair. In 1962, the British Army’s Royal Engineers used the deteriorating structure for a controlled demolition exercise. While the house is gone, the "bones" of the estate remain. Attentive visitors can still find the old generator shed that once provided the house with its own electricity—a rare luxury for the time—and the artificial Lochan Gharrabain, which served both as a power source and a centerpiece for the landscaped grounds.

The Waterfall Trail: A Journey to the Sound

The primary draw for many visitors is the Waterfalls Trail. This route follows the Aros Burn as it tumbles through a steep, wooded glen toward the sea.

  • The Upper Falls: Easily accessible from the main car park, these falls offer a beautiful introduction to the park's hydrology. The water spills over moss-covered basalt ledges, surrounded by a lush canopy of ancient beech and oak.
  • The Lower Falls: Continuing downstream, the path crosses the estate road and narrows. This section can be boggy, but the reward is significant. The Lower Falls are the more dramatic of the two, plunging into a deep, dark gorge. From certain vantage points, you can capture the white water of the falls in the foreground with the turquoise waters of Tobermory Bay and the CalMac ferry in the far distance.
