Binnein Mor and Gruagaichean
Binnein Mor is a mountain in the Scottish Highlands, located in the Mamores range between Glen Nevis and Loch Leven. It is the highest peak in the Mamores, with an elevation of 1130 metres (3709 feet). Its name means “big peak” in Gaelic.

Binnein Mor is a graceful and pyramidal mountain, with a narrow ridge connecting it to its lower neighbour, Na Gruagaichean. It offers superb views of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, as well as the rest of the Mamores and the surrounding glens and lochs. It is a popular destination for hillwalkers and climbers, who can access it from various routes.

One of the most common routes to Binnein Mor starts from Kinlochleven, a village at the eastern end of Loch Leven. From there, a steep path through the woods leads to a moorland track that crosses a vehicle track and continues up to Coire an Lochain, a small loch at the foot of Binnein Mor. From here, a steep climb up grassy slopes leads to the summit ridge, which is mostly easy but has some rocky sections. The summit cairn is reached after a short walk along the ridge.

Another route to Binnein Mor starts from Glen Nevis, a valley at the southern end of Ben Nevis. From there, a path follows the Water of Nevis upstream to Steall Falls, a spectacular waterfall. From here, a rough path climbs up to An Gearanach, another Munro in the Mamores. From An Gearanach, a narrow and rocky ridge leads to Stob Coire a’ Chairn, another Munro. From here, a broad and grassy ridge descends to a col before ascending again to Na Gruagaichean. From Na Gruagaichean, a short walk along the ridge leads to Binnein Mor.

Binnein Mor can also be combined with other Munros in the Mamores for longer and more challenging walks. For example, some hillwalkers traverse the whole Mamores ridge in one day, bagging ten Munros and seven tops in around 34 kilometres (21 miles). This is a major undertaking that requires good fitness, navigation skills and favourable weather conditions.

Binnein Mor is a magnificent mountain that deserves its name. It is one of the highlights of the Mamores range and of Scottish hillwalking in general. It offers stunning scenery, varied terrain and rewarding challenges for walkers of different abilities.
